Research Overview

Research Project Title: Advanced Techniques in Additive Manufacturing and Hybrid Remanufacturing through Powder-Based Directed Energy Deposition

Principal Investigator (PI) Name: Dr. Iris Rivero

Institution and Department: University of Florida, Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering

Amount of Time Affiliated with the Project: since November 2023

Research Focus: My research focuses on enhancing additive manufacturing (AM) and hybrid remanufacturing processes through the use of powder-based directed energy deposition (DED). This cutting-edge technique integrates additive manufacturing with traditional manufacturing methods to produce complex components with high precision and material efficiency. Specifically, my work investigates the optimization of process parameters to improve material properties, such as strength and durability, and explores innovative applications in various industries. By refining powder-based DED methods, we aim to push the boundaries of what can be achieved in custom manufacturing and repair processes, thus contributing to advancements in both manufacturing technology and material science.

Project Responsibilities: In this project, my responsibilities include conducting experiments to assess the performance of powder-based DED systems under various conditions. I am involved in designing and setting up experimental trials, analyzing the resulting data, and interpreting the outcomes to refine process parameters. Additionally, I collaborate with team members to troubleshoot issues, develop new techniques, and document findings in research reports. My role also entails presenting results at team meetings and contributing to publications that disseminate our findings to the broader scientific community. Through these activities, I support the advancement of our understanding and application of hybrid remanufacturing technologies.
